Happy birthday! The sun has returned to the sign it was in when you were born. Your star sign is illuminated by the sun’s bright light. It’s your personal New Year. A new beginning. Begin with vision. Begin with a wish. The ritual of making a wish when blowing out birthday candles originated as a devotion to the moon goddess Artemis.

To celebrate Artemis’s birthday, ancient Greeks brought crescent-shaped cakes topped with burning candles to her temple. They shared their deepest wishes with her and presented the cake as an offering to ensure her good graces.

What wishes will you bring to the moon goddess?

The moon rules the right brain, the feminine, the intuitive, the visual, the symbolic, the subconscious. Images and symbols communicate your conscious desires to your subconscious mind, creating lasting, positive change.

In astrology, the sun represents the essence of who you are and the moon represents your emotional nature. As the bright sun journeys through the zodiac over the course of a year, it illuminates different life areas – the zodiac signs. The sun shines a spotlight on the themes of your essential self-development. The moon moves through our sky much more rapidly, mimicking the rapid ebb and flow of the tidal waves of our emotions. Emotions are the language of manifestation. What you feel, you will manifest more of in your life. By changing your thoughts, you can change your emotions. Using a journal alongside the moon’s cycle will help you choose the thoughts and feelings that you would like to have, so that you can manifest the life you desire.

The moon has a 28-day cycle. There are two phases to this cycle: waxing and waning.

WAXING

• When the moon is increasing in size.

• Begins on the new moon and lasts until the third day of the full moon.

• Represents increase.

WANING

• When the moon is decreasing in size.

• Begins on the third day of the full moon and ends on the new moon.

• Represents decrease.

The two phases are divided into four quarters. These quarters are where we will focus our attention in this book: new moon, first quarter, full moon and third quarter. Each has a different energy and is best suited to unique activities, intentions and rituals.

A WORD ON RITUALS

As you move through the moon cycle, you will be presented with rituals. A ritual is a symbolic activity. The language of the subconscious mind is symbolic. Acting out a ritual is a way to effect positive changes deep in your subconscious mind. There is no right or wrong way to create a ritual – use your creativity to expand on the rituals presented and make them perfect for you.

Understanding the Moon Cycle Shown here are the eight significant parts of the moon cycle, along with their meanings.

NEW MOON

The new moon is the perfect time to set intentions. At this time, it’s not visible in the sky. It is sometimes called the dark moon or the hare moon.

The energy of the new moon is quiet. Without the benefit of the moon’s light, our ancestors rested on new moon nights. Use this time to go inward and reflect on your desires. Set intentions for your life. Think of these intentions as seeds. What will you cultivate during the moon cycle?

ACTIVITIES

Quiet time. Alone time. Rest and recuperation. Pray. Meditate.

RITUALS

Every month, go through your previous new moon intentions and write the ones that you are still hoping to fulfil on a fresh sheet of paper, along with this month’s new moon intentions.

Give your wishes to the moon. Write a letter to the moon telling her all about your hopes, dreams, goals and intentions. Don’t forget to say ‘Thank you!’

FIRST QUARTER MOON

This phase is all about development.

You planted your seeds on the new moon. Now it’s time to help them grow! The first quarter moon can inspire you to take action, make decisions and overcome challenges. Work towards your goals.

ACTIVITIES

This is a busy time! Do any work or activities that will support your intentions. Accumulate. Work. Socialise. Produce. Build momentum.

RITUALS

Say your intentions aloud while looking in the mirror. Imagine that you’ve achieved them. Create a feeling of gratitude as an energetic match for your intentions.

FULL MOON

When the moon is completely illuminated, it’s time to reach full expression.

The full moon is the most powerful time of the entire moon cycle. Enjoy the full expression of life. Be fully engaged. Let the light of the moon energise you. This is your harvest. Harvest new internal realisations. Take note of your epiphanies. Harvest external success. Enjoy the life you are creating. Celebrate. This is a powerfully healing time. Send healing blessings to others.

ACTIVITIES

Play, sing, dance, draw. Harvest. Celebrate your accomplishments, big or small, with someone you trust. Share what you’ve discovered about yourself. Light a candle on your altar to honour your growth. Cleanse your crystals in the light of the moon.

RITUALS

Bathe in the moonlight. Allow the healing light of the moon to nurture and invigorate you.

Take a meditative and cleansing bath. Fill the bath with essential oils and cleansing Epsom salts. Meditate on your affirmations. Meditate on what you will let go of in the next phase.

THIRD QUARTER MOON
(also called the last quarter)

When the moon appears smaller and becomes half-illuminated, it’s time to think about releasing.

The third quarter moon phase signals a time to let go. Release anything you no longer need to make room for the new! Meditate on what you’ve learned during the course of the moon cycle. Take stock of your life and notice if there are any relationships, commitments, physical objects, habits or emotions you are ready to let go of. Letting go will free up energy that can be used during the next moon cycle. This is a quiet time to rest and restore.

ACTIVITIES

Cleaning. Using your journal. Meditating. Doing nothing. Resting.

RITUALS

On a piece of paper, write down what you are ready to release.

Burn the paper in a safe place. Say aloud what you are releasing as you watch the paper burn. When the paper has finished burning, breathe in a deep cleansing breath and smile.
